Periodontics is the expert treatment of periodontal disease. Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is a serious infection of the gum tissues and supporting bone structures that hold your teeth in place. It is usually caused by having poor oral health, and can be exacerbated by factors such as increased hormone levels during puberty, pregnancy or menopause, as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes.
The symptoms include gums which are tender, bleeding or swollen, loose teeth or painful areas in your mouth. However, it is also possible for symptoms to be minimal and go unnoticed.
Unfortunately periodontal disease is fairly common. However, it is also preventable with maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
If caught early, the first stages of periodontitis, known as gingivitis, can be treated very effectively with good brushing and flossing routines and professional cleanings with an Oral Health Therapist. Together these can significantly help prevent any further damage from occurring.
The more advanced stages of periodontal disease will usually require in-depth gum disease treatments from a periodontal expert, which may even include oral surgery.
